Between the market and the state: the capacity of business associations for policy engagement in Uganda
Journal article, Created By Kuteesa, Annette and Published By Cambridge University Press in English language
This study assesses the capabilities of business associations for conducting meaningful policy engagements with government. Using information from 21 associations and five state institutions, this work investigates the level of autonomy and ability of business associations to coordinate and order their interests for policy decision-making. Findings reveal that the ability to organise an association's own interests is hindered by weak systems and internal structures, especially at sub-sector level. Most associations are financially weak, have limited professional expertise and experience ...
Behind the violence: The war in northern Uganda
Book/Monograph, Created By Lomo, Zachary; Hovil, Lucy and Published By Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in English language
The war in northern Uganda is now entering its eighteenth year. Initially rooted in a popular rebellion against President Yoweri Museveni's National Resistance Movement (NRM) government, the conflict has since been transformed by Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) into a brutally violent war in which civilians are the main victims. More than 1,4 million people have been displaced, and tens of thousands more have been killed, raped or abducted. At first glance, the persistence of the LRA over such a long period is incomprehensible: the ma...

Journal article, Created By Parker, Melissa and Published By Taylor & Francis in English language
It is recognized that the control of schistosomisais in Uganda requires a focus on fisherfolk. Since 2004, a policy has been adopted of providing drugs, free of charge, to all those at risk. The strategy has been reported to be successful, but closer investigation reveals serious problems. This paper draws upon long-term research undertaken at three locations in northwestern and southeastern Uganda. It highlights cons...
Commentary: some reflections on ethical developments in African archaeology
Journal article, Created By Reid, Andrew and Published By Taylor & Francis Group in English language

Challenging dominance: the opposition, the coalition and the 2016 election in Uganda
Journal article, Created By Beardsworth, Nicole and Published By Taylor & Francis Group in English language
Contrary to the experience of many African countries, opposition coalitions are a frequent feature of elections in Uganda. A product of previous alliance efforts and a concerted effort by sections of civil society to facilitate coordination between parties, the 2016 Democratic Alliance was the most cogent collective to date. The broad alliance fragmented just three months before the election as the Forum for Democratic Change pulled out over the selection of the joint presidential candidate. This paper will look at the logic that underlies coalition formation...
